I recently just completed the first half of my continuity assessment for makeup in motion. Prior to the timed assessment I had taken the time to plan, and practice my character design on my model in the makeup studios, in and out of lessons. My chosen character I created was Dorian Gray; from Oscar Wilde's novel, when creating my final face design for my character I had already decided I wanted to incorporate some of the makeup skills/effects I had learnt and practiced in Sues lesson etc, redness, sweating, bruising. Because of this I created a makeup design which I could use to symbolise Dorian Grays portrait which is constantly inflicted by Dorian Grays sinful actions. My make-up design symbolises Dorian Gray's struggle to maintain his evil lifestyle any how his repressed fears and desires have begun to seep through his physical body as it is too much for his portrait to hold anymore.
The above image is of my final face design for my character Dorian Gray, I had made variety of different face designs before deciding on my final design to execute. Due to being inspired by the new techniques learnt in Sues session, I wanted to create sweating, redness, bruising and cuts.
Makeup design Plan
- Prime and prep skin; Moisturiser, Matte finish Primer and 2 in 1 post balm shave
- Base consisting of normal skin tone (even and slightly pale skin tones) mixed with illamasqua skin base
- Illamasqua setting powder and white kryolan supra colour to create grey facial hairs and head hair
- Nose and scar wax for the lip cut/scar - coloration of nose and scar wax will be created by using the supra colour palette and also the kryolan foundation palette
- Using the red shade from the kryolan supra colour palette, I created some redness/swelling effect to the skin by using moisturiser with it which breaks up the colour making it look more muted and real on the skin
I felt that my performance in this first half of the final assessment was good and I was very confident prior to creating my makeup design. I had taken the time to practice on my model and myself outside of studio sessions and made sure to purchase the correct products I would need during the TA. Finding my model (Simon) to re-create Dorian Gray was quite easy as I was recommended him by a friend whilst searching for a suitable model. Prior to the TA, I had prepped cleaned, and organised my makeup brushes, products I would need, face designs, and other tools and the clothing of my model. As Sue had already mentioned in a session that It is important to consider all factors of your character inducing the clothes so that everything connects/ looks finished.
I had brought everything I needed to in the timed assessment and set up my tools and products professionally making sure I was ready to begin when Sue said we could start. Simon had brought in a smart white shirt and black jacket/blazer so that he could wear them in the final images. I think I had good time management during and beforehand the final timed assessment and it showed as, I was able to create and finish my final face and hair design successfully within the limited time easily I think this was due to me practicing a lot outside of studio sessions. I brought my face charts and made sure to reference between my face charts and hair charts whilst applying the makeup to my model and also looking in my mirror at what I was creating as well as just my models face close up.
I was very pleased with the final outcome of my makeup design and felt I had better make-up application compared to last semester which is something I aimed to improve on in response to my feedback from Sue. Something I feel I could have improved on was the styling of my hair design as due to my models hair length and texture I had adapt my original hair designs as I hadn't realised my models hair was much shorter and thicker than I had expected. I feel the hair is something that will let me down or appear quite different in images due to this issues that I had work around.
My next steps are to print off my final images of my continuity makeup so that I can use them as a guide in the next half of the continuity assessment.
