Dorian Gray - Practicing my design

In order to prepare myself for the upcoming continuity assessment, I asked my model Simon, to come into the makeup studios when we were both available so that I could practice my hair and make-up design on him. After getting the chance to properly talk to Simon and also analyse his hair, skin and facial features I felt more than happy with my male model choice as I feel he already has the ideal hair, facial hair and face shape. Having a model who looked similar to how I imagine Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's novel, is very important to me when creating my character as I wanted to create a strong character with a strong Victorian/Dorian Gray theme who symbolises the emotion, tiredness, pain and confusion that Dorian Gray portrays throughout the novel towards the end when Dorian begins to feel guilty and repent his sinful actions.

When practicing my design in the studios I did bring a face and hair chart in with me prior to the practice so that I had a guide in regards to make-up, I say a 'guide' as even though I had created a few face designs prior to the practice I didn't feel blown away or sure about the designs I had created already, I think this is because I hadn't practiced on my male model yet. Because I wasn't sure yet about my designs as this was my first practice, I chose my favourite design and then adapted and improved this design whilst transforming my model.

Above is the face chart I used as a guide throughout the practice. My vision was to make my character Dorian Gray appear, tired, battered and rough which are all emotions Dorian feels in novel when his subconscious becomes uncontrollable and he begins to repent. The bruise on the eye is created when Dorian faints in is conservatory during the novel and apparently sees James Vane, I wanted to create a horrible red/black bruise on the eye as if he caught his eye on something as he fainted and saw James Vane creating a even more horrible and scary situation (chapters 17-18). The redness over the face is to make Dorian appear as if he is flushed, sweaty and ill as if he had just seen something awful (James Vane), I wanted to spread the red colour onto different areas of the face so that it appears blotchy. To add more gore and mystery to the face design I added a split lip in the design with some dryness on the lips also although this changed during the practice.

What I changed/created throughout the practice;

-Added ageing/ grey hair to the facial hair, eyebrows and head hair
-Going to purchase some Glycerine to add to the face (redness, sweat)
-Added redness to the bruised eye
-Added scar wax to the lips (split lip)
-Added latex to the lips (Dry skin)
-Used Kyolan foundation palette and skin base (pale pasty skin)
-Brushed white supra colour through the eyebrows, side burns, front hair, facial hair (Ageing)
-Dry Shampoo (grey/ageing hair)
- Applied fountain and redness to the ears also

Products Used;

Kryolan supra color palette
Cryogen Foundation palette
Super drug Dry Shampoo
Liquid Latex
Super drug 2 in 1 Shave balm and moisturiser
Illamasqua skin base
Kryolan nose and scar wax

The above face chart is my final face chart I created in response to all my ideas and also my practice on my male model. I recently ordered and purchased a few products so that I could achieve the look I want on my model.

Products brought for assessment
- Kryolan Glycerine
-Superdrug Dry Shampoo
-Superdrug Shave Balm and moisturiser 2 in 1
-Nose and scar wax

What I did

-Prepped and cleansed the skin (cleanser, toner, moisturiser)
-Prime the skin with Illamasqua satin primer, moisturiser and shave balm (I used three different moisturising products to make sure Simons skin was smooth and hydrated as mens skin tends to be dryer)
-After skin was primed I began applying a mixture of skin base and the palest foundation shade from my Kryolan foundation palette together and then buffed it into the face on visible skin
-After the base was created I began to add redness to the skin by taking the red shade from the supra colour palette and gradually blending and building up red colour on Simon's skin with my fingers (I liked using this technique as the red blended out nicely from the warmth of my fingers, I applied redness all over the skin so that it appeared really blotchy and flushed (sweaty redness blotchiness)
-After creating redness I began to make my bruised eye effect, I began to apply black, red, purple and blue onto the inner eye area and then bend it out with brushes and my fingers
-After creating the bruised eye I added some redness on the outer area of the bruise so that it would appear more sore and puffy
-I created ageing/grey hair on Simons, facial hair, head hair and eyebrows I took a disposable mascara wand and dabbed it inside my white supra colour and also some skin base and then lightly stroked the product onto the hairs (I liked this effect and found it made the hairs look naturally ages as the product isn't touching the skin)
-To age the lips I applied latex with an art brush in a stipling motion so that the latex began to appear as peeling/flaking skin
-To create a small gore looking split lip I took a small amount of wax and began to mould and roll the product on to the bottom of the lips to create a slit/sausage shape and once happy with the shape I began to colour the wound with supra colours (red black yellow)
-beginning the hair I sectioned Simons hair and began to use the tongs to curl the hair in a backwards direction
-Once the hair was styled as I wanted it to I sprayed Simons hair with glossy hair polish spray to create a sleek sheen finish to the hair and then slightly back combed the front of Simons hair so that it wasn't as flat
-To finish the hair I used supra colour and dry shampoo to add a grey/white tint to the hair all over

I was overall quite pleased with my practice on Simon and felt confident afterwards in response to the continuity assessment. Allowing myself to shadow and adapt my face design during my practice has made it easier for me to try and remember and perfect my techniques before the assessment as I know what i want to create now. I would like to improve the bruise I created as I feel the blending could have been a lot better and also more emphasis on the darker (redness soreness) bruising colours so that it looks more realistic and painful. During the assessment I will also make sure to apply my base to the ears and slightly down the neck and also add some redness to the ears also to tie the redness on the face all together. I feel the shaping/moulding of my split lip needs to be adapted and improved also as I want it too look more disgusting, dry and realistic.

I will need to adapt my hair design completely as I was unaware of how short and incredibly thick my models hair is, this was a problem as my hair charts and ideas I had created were for medium to long hair. As Simon's hair was very thick I was still able to style the hair but it didn't appear the same as my hair designs as his hair length was completely different. To compensate and adapt my design to Simons hair type I have decided to use hot rollers and then style the hair backwards so that there is lots of texture and volume, I will also mess the hair up a little too and finish Simons hair by spraying with with dry shampoo and stroking with white supra colour so that he appears aged and old.
